The Science Behind: how we craft diamonds from fur

At Pelo, we believe that connection can be made permanent, transformed into something as beautiful and enduring as a diamond. But how exactly do we turn your pet’s cherished fur into a brilliant gemstone? We proudly use a technology called Chemical Vapor Deposition or CVD in our labs to create a perfect diamond for you. 

Step 1: Carbon Gasification

Every diamond, whether from the earth or a lab, is made of pure carbon. Your pet’s fur, hair, or even their feathers are rich in this essential element. The first step is to carefully extract and purify this carbon.

We place the fur you send us in a specialized vacuum furnace. This process uses heat to gasify the organic material. As the fur is vaporized, the carbon it contains is released as a gas. This carbon-rich gas is then carefully captured and stored in a sealed tank. (we will send you pictures of the tank with your pet's name on it!) This step ensures that we have a pure, controlled source of carbon for the next phase.

Step 2: The Carbon-to-Diamond Transformation with CVD

This is where the real science happens. We use a process called Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). In a sealed growth chamber, a tiny diamond "seed" acts as the foundation for the diamond to grow. The tank containing the carbon gas from your pet's fur is then connected to this chamber.

As the chamber heats up, we introduce the carbon gas from the tank, along with a supply of methane (CH4) gas. The energy source breaks the molecular bonds of the gases, causing the carbon atoms to "rain down" on the diamond seed. Over several weeks, these atoms slowly accumulate, bonding layer by layer, until they grow into a rough, uncut diamond.

Step 3: Cutting, Polishing, and Certification

The rough diamond from the CVD process is now ready to be shaped. Our expert cutters the precise facets that give a diamond its sparkle and then polish it to a brilliant finish.

Each Pelo diamond is also certified. This means it's sent to the International Gemological Institute (the IGI) for an independent analysis. They verify its authenticity and grade its quality based on the standard "4 C's": carat weight, color, clarity, and cut.
